Crate DIGGING

One of Glasgow’s finest young club DJs, REBECCA VASMANT, picks her top five tracks for The List this issue. They’re not what you might expect.

I love jazz music, and as much as I love house music too, I don’t think it has the same timelessness. My first choice is one I got about a year ago, it’s PE Hewitt Winter Winds (Now-Again), a three-LP box set of material self-recorded by a 16- year-old pianist between 1968 and 1970. They’re absolutely outstanding, the guy’s a genius and amazingly talented. The next one’s more up to date, it’s Jose James Desire (Brownswood Recordings), which is my favourite track from his album The Dreamer. It’s a very simple piano piece but it totally works. I love music that’s off-key, that bends the rules.

One of my favourite artist’s tracks is Roy Ayers ‘Chicago’ (Uno Melodic) [from the album Silver Vibrations], although I know everybody’s mad for ‘Everybody Loves the Sunshine’. But this works in house sets, in jazz sets, in disco sets. They say you shouldn’t meet your heroes, but I saw him performing with Pete Rock in Glasgow last year and chatted to him for half an hour after, he was such a nice person.

The legendary Bill Evans ‘Peace Piece’ (Riverside) [from the album Everybody Digs Bill Evans] apparently had him playing a classical piece with one hand and improvising with the other. Again it’s so simple but really emotional, I’ve listened to it literally every week for the last five years, and it’s as personal to me as Stan Tracy ‘Starless & Bible Black’ (RCA) [from the album Under Milk Wood ]. If I ever get married one of those two songs will be playing. Rebecca Vasment plays the Ministry of Sound & Mixmag Warehouse Party at SWG3, Glasgow, Sat 26 May.
