How did you get that job?

Name Susie Henry Job title Consultant and Lecturer in MSc Creative Advertising

Company Edinburgh Napier University When did you start your job? I’ve been a consultant now for several years. I started as a guest lecturer in Creative Advertising at Edinburgh Napier in 2005, and have since gone on to work in my current role.

So what does your job actually involve? I started off my advertising career as a trainee art director, then switched to copywriting. In later years, I began to focus more on film. Script writing is a very precise discipline. Working as one half of a creative team, it begins with batting ideas around. When you have something you feel confident and excited about, you then have the task of making it work in 40 or 30 seconds. Working as a lecturer gives me a fresh perspective on the

creative process. My students come up with ideas for multi- channel platforms that were simply not on the radar 20 years ago. Best / Worst Aspects? Agency life has a seductive energy an about it. This can mean long hours that you don’t notice. There’s an optimism that’s contagious and terrific team spirit. When you win a pitch or an award, the whole place celebrates. At worst, when an agency has a bad run of form, everyone feels the pain.

Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Susie Henry at the start of her career? Remember that, as a female, you’ll be in the minority, even more so in the Creative Department. Don’t let that daunt you. You will have a different tilt on life. Use it. 80% of advertised products are bought by women. Your insight will be invaluable.

Join in with everything. Agencies are hard-working but

highly sociable places. Talk to everyone in every department. If you haven’t landed the job of your dreams yet, don’t give up. Confidence is everything. A number of agencies offer short- term placements and The Leith Agency has a new Hot Desk system that’s open to aspiring creatives, planners, account executives and TV producers. A fantastic idea. and finally . . . Tell us about Edinburgh Napier’s 2012 Degree Show The opening night of the School of Arts & Creative Industries Degree Show is on Thu 24 May. It’s the hot ticket, attracting interest from leading industry names from all over Scotland. The work being showcased includes design, photography, film, and of course the advertising talent of tomorrow. Edinburgh Napier’s Degree Show will take place from Fri 25 May–Fri 1 Jun. edinburghnapierdegreeshow. com
