1-29 MAR YOU’VE GOT 29 DAYS TO LIVE!
It can be easy to become complacent – to take it for granted that a strong arts scene can always weather a crisis. On the whole this is true, but not always. If there’s one thing common to people’s opinions on the problems (namely licencing costs, and a lack of venues) facing Glasgow and Edinburgh’s creative communities, it’s that cheap, easily available space is hugely important. Remove this space and creative people . . . well, they’ll just find somewhere else to go. It’s not just that Scotland can and should be making good
art, the strikingly clear fact is that grassroots artists stimulate growth of various kinds. Glasgow’s UNESCOCity of Music status, or the Edinburgh Fringe for example, think where these valuable assets orginated: in bars and pub back rooms; in warehouses and churches; in open-minded and experimental venues. Take a look at the opinions on pages 10 and 14 to see why Scotland’s strong tradition of giving artists opportunities could be under threat, and why it’s so important (for everyone, not just artists) to preserve it.
