L–R: the enigmatic trio of Boyce, MacDonald and Mackenzie.

Seeing the light

Tramway score a hat-trick with a new artwork by Martin Boyce, Raymond MacDonald and David Mackenzie Words: Anna Millar

W hat happens when a Turner Prize-winning artist, a jazz innovator and a celebrated Hollywood director get together to make a work of art? Well, we’re not quite sure yet, but that’s the intriguing question being posed by Glasgow’s Tramway this month.

The much-anticipated collaboration between sculptor Boyce, musician MacDonald and filmmaker Mackenzie is, apparently, a bid to better explore the space between music, art and film. The trio will showcase Scarecrows this month as part of their major new work, Lighthouses, which will be

revealed in October. Throughout February, audiences will be presented with a different selection of live music, recordings, images, improvised objects and conversations, all collated by the men over the last 18 months. Clearer details are yet to be revealed, but we’re told to be on the look-out for special guests. And with such a dream team at the project’s heart you should also be prepared to encounter all manner of mind- expanding phenomena.

Tramway, Glasgow, Thu 9–Sat 11 Feb, 7.30pm.
