INDEX Film

In addition to an exciting programme of visually engaging theatre pieces (see our interview with festival director Simon Hart on page 99 for more on that), the Manipulate festival at the Traverse also boasts a range of fantastic animated films: musical Cuban romance Chico & Rita, surreal Israeli war film Waltz With Bashir, and British director Phil Mulloy’s minimalist sexual melodrama Goodbye, Mr Christie. There’s also a programme of short films grouped under the title Off to the Asylum, exploring the theme of madness in human nature. Don’t be fooled by their animated nature, though none of the above is suitable for kids. Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, Mon 30 Jan–Sat 4 Feb.

page 43. Part of Takeaway China. CCA, Glasgow. Happy Feet Two (U) (George Miller, Australia, 2011) Voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Pink. 103min. This sequel to the original sugary penguin animation follows Mumble’s son, Erik, as he tries to make his mark in the world. General release. Happy Gilmore (12) (Dennis Dugan, US, 1996) Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen. 92min. A would- be ice hockey pro, who can hit the puck with explosive force, finds himself raising hackles on the golf circuit. Predictable comedy pepped up by Sandler’s energy. Yet another unwanted Saturday Night Live spin- off. Sloans, Glasgow.

✽✽ Haywire (tbc) (Steven Soderbergh, US, 2011) Gina Carano, Ewan

McGregor, Michael Fassbender. When a black ops soldier is double crossed, she must use all her skills to escape an international manhunt and protect her family. General release from Wed 18 Jan. The Help (12A) ●●●●● (Tate Taylor, US/India/UAE, 2011) Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer. 146min. Based on Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel, The Help follows one progressive young white daughter of Jackson (Stone) as she befriends and records the experiences of abused black maids. Rising star Stone handles her role with a certain amount of warranted self effacement. Moving and thought-provoking. Selected release. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (18) (John McNaughton, US, 1986) Michael Rooker, Tracy Arnold, Tom Towles. 83min. The static camera gives McNaughton’s film an element of cold detachment as we watch serial killer Henry and his flatmate Otis chatting and killing. Glasgow Film Theatre, Glasgow. Horrid Henry: The Movie (U) ●●●●● (Nick Moore, UK, 2011) Theo Stevenson, Anjelica Huston, Richard E Grant. Big screen off-shoot of popular British children’s television show about a naughty boy and some pretty scary adults. Glasgow Film Theatre, Glasgow. Thriller/drama about the travails of a meteorological team based in the Arctic. Glasgow Film Theatre, Glasgow. Hugo (PG) (Martin Scorsese, US, 2011) Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz, Ben Kingsley. 127min. Scorsese films Brian Selznick’s book for youngsters, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, with Butterfield as the young orphan thief who becomes embroiled in a mystery involving a stolen key, a cryptic drawing and a mechanical man, courtesy of accomplices Isabelle (Moretz) and shopkeeper Georges (Kingsley). General release. The Ides of March (15) (George Clooney, US, 2011) Paul Giamatti, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman. 101min. Clooney’s fourth directorial effort is set around a hotly contested Ohio Presidential Primary and from mundane opening to murky sex scandal is surprisingly effective for such a by-the-numbers political drama. Selected release. The Incredibles (PG) (Brad Bird, USA, 2004) Voices of Craig T Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L Jackson, Jason Lee. 120min. Witty and endearing Pixar animated adventure film that pushes all the right buttons and references all the best films and classic TV series, with an inspired cast (Lee’s Syndrome in particular) to boot. Let’s face it, this may just be too good for mere kids. macrobert, Stirling. Inside Hana’s Suitcase (12A) (Larry Weinstein, Canada/Czech Republic, 2009) 88min.
