Warm up this winter with free art in Edinburgh

Now the party season is over and the festivities long gone, you and your wallet could probably do with a little TLC. Luckily the National Galleries of Scotland have a full programme of free exhibitions and events during January, to help nourish the mind and soul without breaking the bank. Here is a list of penny-pinching top picks to help ease those January blues.

SUN 1–TUE 31 JAN EXHIBITION: TURNER IN JANUARY 2012 This outstanding exhibition showcases a watercolour collection from one of Britain’s most prolific artist’s, JMW Turner. The works have been on display at the Gallery every January for the last 110 years, as requested by the collector Henry Vaughan, who wanted to limit the paintings’ exposure to light. Travel with Turner to the ‘sublime’ mountainous landscapes of Wales, Scotland and the Alps, and see what all the fuss was about.

THU 5 & FRI 6 JAN, 2-4PM EASEL SKETCHING IN THE GALLERY Have a go at sketching your own masterpiece. The class tackles a different subject each month (occasionally using live models) and is led by artist Damian Callan.

WED 18 JAN, 6-7PM: HAWTHORNDEN LECTURE THEATRE THE MISSING: A NATIONAL COLLABORATION Artist Graham Fagan was commissioned by the

Patrick Elliot, Senior Curator at the Gallery of Modern Art, discusses the unusual and problematic matter of posthumous casting.
