Crate DIGGING

DJ ASTROBOY celebrates the last regular Departure Lounge by taking us through some of the key tracks from their history

When we started the night back in 2003 little did we think it would take off like it did. The mixture of live music and DJ sets of African, Latin, jazz and soul influenced dance music really proved a big hit, and allowed us to bring many favourite acts to Edinburgh. Soul Jazz Orchestra ‘Mista President’ (Do Right!) is a throbbing slab of insurrectionary Afro-funk. These guys played twice at the club, and their brand of spiritualized Afrobeat has set the place off each time. Azymuth ‘Depois Do

Carnival (Spiritual South Mix)’ (Far Out) is a sublime piece of samba house featuring Brazilian legends Azymuth who’s live set back in 2006 is probably an all-time highlight.

Remember broken beat? For us Jazztronik ‘Samurai’ (Pantone) is probably the apex of that ‘genre’. This track is a monster, and when Jazztronik dropped in with his full band from Japan in 2005 and played this track, it was almost too much.

Raw Deal ‘Blues For

Brother George Jackson’ (Straight Ahead) goes way back. Jimbo ‘Raw Deal’ Robbins played our second night, and this Latin house bomb is probably his finest moment.

Closer to home is Mungo’s

Hi-Fi ‘Belly Ska’ (Scotch Bonnet) and we’ve always loved a bit of dubwise sound at DL. From Glasgow, Mungo’s most skanking tune to date, causes mayhem every time. Memorably, Mungo’s have installed their rig at The Caves a couple times for our Hogmanay parties. I included Zed Bias & Omar

‘Dancing’ (Tru Thoughts) because Tru Thoughts has been a favourite record label at Departure Lounge, and we’ve featured most of their acts over the years. Departure Lounge at the Caves, Edinburgh, Sat 31 Dec.
