First- footing Put your feet to work on one of Glasgow and Edinburgh’s many
dancefloors, as Henry Northmore picks
the best of the New Year clubs
H ogmanay, the biggest night of the year in the clubbing calendar, even folk who hardly ever venture out after midnight are hunting out some dancefloor action. And perhaps the biggest names behind the decks in Glasgow this New Year Eve will be the irrepressible 2 Many DJs (O2 Academy) as the Belgian Brothers present the controlled chaos of their multi-genre mash-up.
Another much loved set of musical magpies and a Glasgow institution in their own right, Optimo move to a new venue as they take over underground art hub The Glue Factory. One More Tune will be commandeering another Glasgow art space as they host a double bill of live electronica from Tiger & Woods and HaHaHa at SWG3.
Keeping it eclectic The Admiral presents A Hogmanay Threesome with three of Glasgow’s favourite nights – Melting Pot, Highlife and Divine – covering everything from disco house to electro to 60s funk. There are no guests just great electronic music from the residents at Numbers X Vitamins (Stereo). If you fancy something a bit cheekier Club Noir are hosting an intimate burlesque party at the Classic Grand with their usual top notch retro soundtrack. For house, the Subculture Hogmanay features all five residents playing out deep house plus special guest Kristian Beyer (one half of Âme). But if all of that sounds a bit lightweight go hardcore (you know the score) at GBXperience (The Arches) promising relentless banging tunes from George Bowie, Mallorca Lee, Korsakoff, Unexist (live debut), Outblast and many more.
Edinburgh throw’s one of the biggest Hogmanay parties in the world so unsurprisingly you’ll be spoilt for choice. The Official Edinburgh Hogmanay Afterparty (HMV Picture House) is headlined by-über producer Mark Ronson with help from Radio 1’s Jaymo and Andy George, plus late addition Sub Focus providing a dose of drum & bass. Two other huge (but very different) parties are Toolroom Knights Fifth Birthday Party (headed by Mark Knight and D Ramirez) at Ocean Terminal and The Vegas! Grand Hogmanay Ball (now at Adam House) with jazz, easy listening, swing and plenty of pizzazz featuring The Love Boat Big Band and Missy Malone. For more retro sounds, of the garage rock and 60s pop variety, The Go-Go will satisfy all your needs with Les Bof! live, and rockabilly club Green Door taking care of the upstairs room. House heads are well catered for as Musika, Heavy Gossip and Ultragroove bring you We Love . . . Hogmanay (Liquid Room) as Julio Bashmore, Deetron and We Love resident Jozif cover all the subgenres with elements of dubstep, electro, techno and deep house.
