FILM Big congrats to Dundee Contemporary Arts, Filmhouse Edinburgh and Glasgow Film Theatre, who have been jointly awarded the Europa Cinemas Award for Best Young Audience Activities. The winners were selected from over 1,057 cinemas for their collaborative work together, as well as the individual projects run by each organisation. MUSIC By ’eck; seldom does the Celtic Connections line-up disappoint and this January’s jamboree looks set to bat many previous incarnations out of the ball park. Highlights include Béla Fleck and the original Flecktones, The Aaron Neville Band, Bruce Hornsby and guests, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, a Woody Guthrie Centennial, Song for Ireland, a one- off reunion gig for Glasgow’s The Big Dish, and Floating Palace, featuring KT Tunstall. Elsewhere, an all-star line-up performs in celebration of the life of the late Gerry Rafferty, who died immediately prior to last year’s festival. The bill includes his daughter Martha Rafferty, long-time friend Rab Noakes, The Proclaimers, Barbara Dickson, Maria Muldaur and Ron Sexsmith. Folk fans shouldn’t be disappointed
ARTS AND CULTURE NEWS COVERED IN TWO MINUTES either, with star turns by Shooglenifty, Session A9, Blazin’ Fiddles, Treacherous Orchestra and Salsa Celtica. This year’s festival runs from Thu 19 Jan–Sun 5 Feb. See celticconnections.com for more. Elsewhere, the festive spirit is strong with List favourite Aidan Moffat, who is making available a free download of a track from his EP, ‘Oh What a Not So Silent Night Before Christmas’. SHOP Shoppers prepare to rejoice! The new SWG3-run gallery-cum- retail emporium, One Hundred Pound Shop, is now open and ready for your business. Expect beautiful prints galore. See repositioned .co.uk for more. THEATRE Of the many things we can depend on the Arches for, encouraging up-and-coming talent is close to the top of the list; and so it is that Kieran Hurley and Gary Gardiner will be taken under their sizeable wing as winners of the Platform 18 Award. Look out for Thatcher’s Children and BEATS, which will be showcased at the Arches and Traverse next year. Before that, Scrubs frontman Zach Braff is set to make his UK stage debut, in new comedy All New People. The Braff-written play will appear at the King’s in Glasgow for
one week only from Tue 14 Feb. VISUAL ART And finally, a huge well done to Glasgow School of Art alumnus Martin Boyce, who has picked up 2011’s Turner Prize. Recognition well earned, we say.
Bela Fleck are just one of the many acts appearing on this year’s stellar Celtic Cennections line-up
