Katrina Bowden. 89min. Cultures clash when two hillbillies go on holiday and bump into a gang of preppy college kids. See Also Released, page 66. Selected release from Fri 23 Sep.

✽✽ Tyrannosaur (18) ●●●●● (Paddy Considine, UK, 2011) Peter Mullan, Olivia Colman, Eddie Marsan. 91min. See feature, page 60 and review, page 66. Glasgow Film Theatre. Uncle David (18) (David Hoyle, Mike Nicholls, Gary Reich, UK, 2010) David Hoyle, Ashley Ryder. 95min. An uncle and his nephew holiday at an out-of-season caravan park where their relationship takes an unsettling turn. Part of POUT LGBT film festival. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. Unhappy Birthday (18) (Mark Harriott, Mike Matthews, UK, 2010) David Paisley, Christina De Vallee, Jill Riddiford. 89min. A couple go to a secluded island unaware of the horror that awaits. Queer take on traditional horror film. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. Villain (15) ●●●●● (Lee Sang-il, Japan, 2011) Satoshi Tsumabuki, Fukatsu Eri. 139min. The tale of a murderer and the ordinary young woman who falls in love with him. Glasgow Film Theatre; macrobert, Stirling. The Visitor (15) ●●●●● (Thomas McCarthy, US, 2007) Richard Jenkins, Haaz Sleiman, Danai Gurira. 103min. Widower Walter Vale (Jenkins) is a grouch. When work sends him to Manhattan, a series of misunderstandings lead him to form a friendship with Syrian drummer Tarek (Sleiman) and his Senegalese girlfriend Zainab (Gurira). Underwritten and beautifully performed, The Visitor is a

sentimental drama that manages to access a hypnotic rhythm that is both convincing and reassuring. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. Warrior (12A) ●●●●● (Gavin O’Connor, US, 2011) Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte, Joel Edgerton. 140min. See review, page 65. General release. We Need to Talk About Kevin (15) (Lynne Ramsay, UK/US, 2011) Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly, Ezra Miller. 112min. The mother of a teenage boy who went on a school killing spree deals with the guilt she feels by writing to her estranged husband. Scottish premiere in Glasgow on Tue 18 Oct; preview screening followed by Q&A with director Lynne Ramsay, writer Lionel Shriver and actor Ezra Miller in Edinburgh on Wed 19 Oct. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. West is West (15) ●●●●● (Andy DeEmmony, UK, 2010) Aqib Khan, Om Puri, Linda Bassett. 103min. Featuring none of the anarchically inventive comedy or keen social observation of East is East, this long- belated sequel follows Salford chip-shop owner George Khan (Puri) as he takes his unruly son on a character-building trip to Pakistan. A few nice moments, but for the most part this is an uninspired and unrewarding sequel. This screening is for women only and is followed by an informal discussion. Booking essential. Glasgow Women’s Library, Glasgow. West Side Story (PG) ●●●●● (Robert Wise & Jerome Robbins, US, 1961) Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno. 152min. Romeo And Juliet revisited against a background of New York gangs. Great songs of course, but the playing of the stylised dancing against a realistic

background contrives to make it all look rather camp these days. Filmhouse, Edinburgh; Glasgow Film Theatre; macrobert, Stirling. What’s Your Number? (15) (Mark Mylod, US, 2011) Anna Faris, Chris Pratt, Chris Evans. 106min. Romantic comedy with Faris as a woman who looks back on previous relationships to see if she let her true love get away. See review at list.co.uk. General release from Fri 30 Sep.

✽✽ When China Met Africa (E) ●●●●● (Marc Francis, Nick Francis,

France/UK, 2010) 74min. The impact of a meeting of over 50 African heads of state in Beijing is felt in Zambia where three characters’ lives unfold. Their story lays bare the rise of China as a global power, and the effect it has on Africa and the rest of the world. Followed by a Q&A with director Marc Francis. Part of Take One Action! Film Festival. Filmhouse, Edinburgh; Glasgow Film Theatre. When We Are Married (U) ●●●●● (Lance Comfort, UK, 1943) Sydney Howard, Raymond Huntley, Olga Lindo. 97min. Adaptation of the JB Priestley comedy in which three couples approaching their silver wedding anniversaries discover that their marriages were never actually legal. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. Who’s That Guy? Tell me More: A Portrait of Guy de Cointet (E) (Marie de Brugerolle, US, 2011) Documentary portrait of reclusive ‘artist’s artist’ and theatre maker Guy de Cointet (1934-1983), filmed over a period of ten years and composed of interviews with artists, friends and colleagues. CCA, Glasgow.

Wings of The Morning (PG) ●●●●● (Harold Schuster, UK, 1937) Henry Fonda, Annabella, Stewart Rome. 89min. The first British Technicolor film is a melodrama centring on the granddaughter of a gypsy woman trying to claim her rightful inheritance from an aristocratic family. Engaging and a little sentimental, but the young Fonda cuts a dashing figure. Filmhouse, Edinburgh. You Are A Surface Too (E) (Various) Audio-visual presentation from Long+Wrong and Screen Bandita with vintage found films and minimalist and psychedelic music performances by Wounded Knee, Noma and Neil A Simpson. CCA, Glasgow. You Instead (15) ●●●●● (David Mackenzie, UK, 2011) Luke Treadaway, Natalia Tena. 80min. A breathless story of mismatched love, as two rival rock stars are accidentally handcuffed together at T in the Park festival (where the whole thing was filmed onsite over two days at the 2010 edition). Moments of inspiration and a certain scruffy charm are marred by awful dialogue and jarring plot contrivances. General release.

✽✽ You’ve Been Trumped (E) ●●●●● (Anthony Baxter, UK, 2011)

95min. Documentary charting one of the US’s most famous hairpiece models, aka Donald Trump, as he moves to build an enormous golf and residential development on land in the north east of Scotland, much to the dismay of the local populace.
