Clash City Showdown A celebration of the music of punk trailblazers The Clash, with a selection of Scotland’s best indie, rock and punk DJs, plus a live band opening the night. Crate DIGGING
GARY BECK joins Slam and Animal Farm at the Edge Festival’s annual Soma Night as part of the Glasgow label’s 20th birthday celebrations. Here he talks us through ‘five tracks that changed my life’.
Groove Armada ‘Remember’ (Zomba Records) featured on the Lovebox album, and features the haunting vocals from Sandy Denny. Groove Armada are a great act which manage to cross many genres with ease, which is something I really admire in a group of artists. The composition of this track is just superb. For me, if I could produce any down- tempo track, this would be it. John Barry ‘The John
Dunbar Theme’ (Soundtrax), I love all John’s work, but this particular track from the Dances with Wolves film gripped me. A really emotional composition. Not many composers come close to him for me, so I was sad to hear of his death earlier this year.
What can I say, Daft Punk ‘Da Funk’ (Soma) is an unbelievable track! I remember the first time I heard it in the Arches many years ago. I was pretty much in love with the scene after that night. It still works on the floor to this day. It’s strange to think they were discovered by the label which I am now so closely involved with.
One of my favourite dance
tracks of all time. Josh Wink feat Lil’ Louis ‘How’s Your Evening So Far’ (Ovum) is so raw and packed with energy. I still play it to this day in some sets. Always a floorfiller. I wish more tracks were made like this. Finally Doves ‘The Cedar
