Rubadub 19th Birthday CLUBS Glasgow’s finest vinyl- and-DJ-equipment emporium has nigh-on two decades of operation under its belt; to celebrate this fact, the folk who run it are celebrating with a live set from Chicago house duo Virgo 4, who are stepping onto these humble shores for the first time. Gina Glover VISUAL ART Photographer Gina Glover started her artistic career as a painter in the 1960s, but moved onto photography as a means of interacting with the wider world. She has channelled her childhood experiences of growing up near a military base into her work, creating her Playgrounds of War exhibition by capturing images of war-torn landscapes and abandoned armed forces facilities from around the world. Among the locations captured are Soviet-era sites in Estonia and Germany, and vandalised fortifications in Latvia (pictured), similar to those found on Edinburgh’s Cramond Island – another of the locations to be featured. See preview, page 123. Street Level Photo Works, Glasgow, until Sun 7 Aug.
How To Dress Well MUSIC Lo-fi hero Tom Krell dons his well-attired stage persona and prepares to drown the Arches in hauntingly ethereal washes of sound. Similarly- themed support is provided by Canadian musician and visual artist Grimes, and home grown electronica act Falconry. See preview, page 113. Arches, Glasgow, Tue 8 Aug.
Super 8 FILM Cloverfield’s JJ Abrams directs and Steven Spielberg produces the type of family-focused sci-fi fare that made the Berg’s name in the first place – a conspiratorial ET- meets-Close Encounters-style adventure. With plentiful room dedicated to the joy of childhood filmmaking, of course. See review, page 106. On general release from Fri 5 Aug.
