PREVIEW STYLISH POLYSEXUAL CLUBBING DRAMA Below Stairs, No 12 Picardy Place (Hawke + Hunter), Tue 2 Aug
There’s something to be said for aspiring to affluence. How else can we explain the success of elite private members clubs or programmes like Gossip Girl and Made in Chelsea? It can’t be the storylines. I’m 97 per cent certain I have seen more scintillating things boaked up on the kitchen floor by my cat.
Feline digestive pyrotechnics aside, if you are
looking for a luxurious night out in Edinburgh, Drama could be what you’re after. ‘When I got approached to run this night, I knew I
wanted to do something different and fresh every week, from live chart artists to DJs and drag acts,’ says founder Darren Kavanagh. Held weekly in Hawke and Hunter (now Below Stairs), Drama favours vocal house with a commercial edge – no cheesy radio edits here.
‘We bring together a mix of DJs from the gay scene and Edinburgh itself. It is a gay night, but it’s very straight-friendly too. Everyone who comes down likes to get into dressing up and having a good time.’
Drama originated in Aberdeen in 2009 and secured a residency in Dublin before popping up in Edinburgh last year. ‘We like to combine good music with live acts, giving it more of a “London” vibe than that of a small town,’ explains Kavanagh, who lived (and clubbed) in both London and New York until recently.
With plans to launch in Glasgow later this year, the Drama team are gearing up for the Fringe, complete with extended opening hours, before celebrating their first anniversary later in August. Their next event is a guest list-only affair, which you can secure your place on by checking Drama out on the internet and taking part in various competitions. Exclusive, no? ■ Drama, Below Stairs, No 12 Picardy Place (Hawke + Hunter), 2 Aug, 11pm, ilovedrama.co.uk
