Not sunny? Then get online and join their mail order Cheese Club instead. Their premises on Morningside Road are worth checking out as well.

An impressively diverse dining option earlier in the day and evening (check the haggis spring rolls, for example), it becomes a well- stocked and bustling cocktail bar by night.

THE BEACH HOUSE 57 Bath Street, Portobello, Edinburgh, EH15 1HE, 0131 657 2636, thebeachhousecafe.co.uk A proper seafront café with a bright aspect and a view onto Portobello beach, this community venture sells sandwiches, soups, big creamy cakes and scones, as well as fair trade teas and coffees. Its nautical theme encompasses the fact it’s next door to Portobello Sailing & Kayaking Club, so you can watch the boats from the strip of tables set along the beach’s edge.
