A FOOD LOVER’S EMPORIUM Ben Raffles grew up on a Somerset farm before pursuing his dreams of becoming a rock star. He eventually arrived in Edinburgh to study and compose music and today combines that with managing the Real Foods shop on Broughton Street, Edinburgh. ‘At Real Foods we treat each customer as an individual – it sounds a cliché but it’s what we do! People are more than just consumers, often they are looking for advice on diet, cooking or
lifestyle choices. I’ve seen people transform over the time they shop here – weight loss, happiness, life-changing decisions, nutrition, disease and allergy management.
People diagnosed with food intolerances often feel devastated and initially confused about what they can eat. Real Foods has the widest selection of thousands of free-from (wheat-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, fat-free etc) alternatives to everything you would normally eat at any meal. We have a thorough understanding of food intolerances so can advise customers on ingredients and cooking too.
Sat 14 May, 1–6pm. 13 Randolph Crescent, 220 7751. Chance to meet visitingstudents, chefs, discover Breton specialities and leave with recipes.
■ Summer Wine Tasting Tue 24 May, 7.30pm. £10. Real Foods, 37 Broughton Street, 557 1911. A tasting of organic wines suited to barbecues, picnics, garden parties and general summery fun. OUTSIDE THE CITIES ■ 24th Paisley Beer Festival Thu 28 Apr, noon–11pm; Fri 29 Apr, noon–midnight; Sat 30 Apr, noon–9.30pm. £5 (£3). Paisley Town Hall, Abbey Close, Paisley. Ales from around UK and Europe.
■ Kingdom of Fife Real Ale, Cider and Perry Festival Thu 28 Apr, 4–11pm; Fri 29 Apr, noon–midnight; Sat 30 Apr, noon–11pm. £5. Rothes Halls, Kingdom Centre, Glenrothes, 01592 611101. Sample ales, wines, ciders, perrys and continental beers, with live music. ■ Loch Fyne Food Fair FREE Sat 14 & Sun 15 May, 11am–6pm. Free entry to fair; parking £3; evening ceilidh tickets £8 (under 16s free). Loch Fyne Oysters, Clachan, Cairndow, 01499 600469. The Fair celebrates its 21st birthday with a festival of west coast food including shellfish, fresh and smoked fish, venison, shortbread, cheese and local ale. Ceilidh on Sat evening.
I think we are like agents for change at Real Foods – it goes beyond work – it is about creating and being part of a community. People are always coming in saying “I’ve been looking for that for years! At last I have found it!”’ ■ Real Foods hold regular, fun and informative events, see the website for updates, realfoods.co.uk
