SHOP: Technicolour JOB: Jewellery and clothes designer After a few weeks of DIY craziness, we opened up before Christmas. We stock bold, contemporary design with a graphic edge. I make jewellery and garments, and design colourful and geometric shapes that sit playfully on the body. I think of both clothing and jewellery as adornments the forms of the body inspire my designs. We stock other artists’ collections Jo Richardson makes jewellery with a contemporary costume aesthetic, and Magda Boreysza, an amazing animator and illustrator, draws the most mischievous monkeys you’ve ever seen. I’m currently running a jewellery exhibition of ECA graduates I have these awesome silver wasp brooches by Matthew Brady and some fantastic installation works by ECA Intermedia student Faith Limbrick. My ‘oblong wrap jacket’ is one of our bestsellers just now. I love the idea of things that can be tied or pinned in a number of different ways to create sculptural shapes around the body. I have it in tweed, ikat, even Massai-print fabric. I love sourcing unusual, striking fabrics. There is a dogtooth cape which has been super popular too. Jo Richardson’s ‘handcuff pearl necklaces’ have also become a total classic. I studied jewellery at ECA, and graduated in 2009. I’d always dreamt of setting up a making / gallery space, and that’s kind of what Technicolour is. It’s a shop, but at the back is my workshop space. You see places like this in Europe and New York, and I’ve always been surprised you don’t see it so much here. It’s cool, as customers can speak to me, and we can work together to create bespoke pieces. I’d love to see more artist-run shops popping up there is so much creative talent in Edinburgh. Technicolour, 2 Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh, jennysweetnam.com, wearetechnicolour.blogspot.com. ‘Technicolour Spring’ a range of new jewellery and fashion will launch on Fri 1 April. There’ll also be a launch party instore for ‘The Exploading Car’, an exhibition of new graphic work by Chris Palmer, Wed 9 Apr. 31 Mar–28 Apr 2011 THE LIST 15
