How did you get that job?
informally show work in progress – this is a rewarding way to round off the week and can also be full of surprises. Oh and I’m a mum too – that job is equally challenging and inspiring!
Best / Worst Aspects? I’ve been privileged throughout my career to work with wonderful, talented people. The Dance House team is relatively small and as is so often in the arts, we work to get the job done – basically there is a fantastic team spirit. My job is varied so I get to feed and challenge different parts of myself, the down side to that can be that I frequently need to move from budgets and application forms to the creative side of my brain several times a day – it’s a dance all of its own. Also, my own vision is the same as the aspirations for the organisation so it’s a bit like the perfect date (well almost . . .). People often comment that I’m lucky to be working in a field that I love – yes I am and it is hard work but to be honest, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Ailsa-Mary at the start of her career? If only I knew when my career ‘started’ I could answer this! OK
– some of this has been learned the
hard way and some of it is tried, tested and strictly adhered to – career and life
are synonymous when it comes to these principles: listen to your guts,
look forward but not with blinkers on so
you can respond to opportunities and
also enjoy the moment; never be afraid to speak up for something you believe
in (including yourself) and approach everything you do, with humility, dignity,
and the capacity to laugh.
And finally . . . what are you most looking forward to in
2011? Summer in our fab new office at The Briggait with the rest of the
team; seeing what our artists, teachers, and dancers produce through the year;
our development residency with Errol
White in the Spring; IETM in Stockholm;
our input for the Merchant City Festival; stepping further towards our vision for a
space for dance in Glasgow; seeing Creative Scotland ‘bed in’, observing
the impact of Black Swan on adult ballet classes, and hours of laughter
with my daughter.
