Meanwhile, a young girl is alone in dreaming of liberation, through the gentle giant figure of Frankenstein, who she identifies with a young but doomed soldier. Erdem’s magnificent work provides a striking vision of childhood in a mountainous Anatolian village overlooking the Aegean Sea. Concentrating on the experiences of a trio of pre-pubescent adolescents within this patriarchal community, where modern technologies are noticeably absent, religion and nature are billed as the only forces guiding the routines of the area’s inhabitants. John Hodge’s screenplay perfectly captures the desperate humour of Irvine Welsh’s novel, keeping the episodic structure of junkie scenes for the first half before concentrating on Renton in London in the later stages. Fast and stylish direction, with a creative soundtrack and acting that’s off-the- rails excellent this cinematic blast from beginning to end shows a complex – and true – understanding of the lure and fatal consequences of drug-taking. Stylised gang warfare flick that avoids the temptations of graphic violence and instead lifts the subject matter to something approaching medieval myth: the New York streets are labyrinths, the gangs are decked out in tribal dress, and a dangerous nighttime journey across the city becomes a heroic quest. Good films for children are hard to get right but Yogi Bear makes it look almost impossible. General release.
