5 THINGS

YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT . . . SIMON MUNNERY 1 Munnery was vice-prez of Cambridge Footlights in the academic year 1987/88 and performed in a show entitled Sheep Go Bare alongside Mel Giedroyc and Tom Hollander, and directed by future author/playwright Jonathan Myerson.

2 After a series of successful Edinburgh Fringes as Alan Parker: Urban Warrior and The League Against Tedium, Munnery was somehow allowed on the tellybox with Attention Scum!. Co-created and directed by his ole buddy Stewart Lee, the shortlived BBC2 series also featured Johnny Vegas, Catherine Tate and Kevin Eldon. Sketches included operatic intermissions, men duelling over hats and stand-up performed on top of transit vans. 3 In an extract for FHM, Munnery wrote about the glory of the hangover, bylining himself as ‘an alcoholic comic and chronic melancholic with only one bollock’.

4 One of his showbiz mates is elusive graffiti artist Banksy who was desperate to block American journos from trying to unveil his mysterious mug. His ‘lawyer’, a well-oiled Munnery, unleashed a 30-minute rant which appeared to dissuade LA Times newshounds from probing any further.

5 Munnery once wrote a poem for his comedy hero, Malcolm Hardee. We reprint it here: ‘There’s only one Malcolm Hardee’. (Brian Donaldson) The Stand, Edinburgh, Thu 10–Sat 12 Feb.
