ROMANTIC ANTICS SIMPLE SUGGESTIONS FOR A SPECIAL VALENTINE’S

Special Valentine-themed events seem to fall around but not on the day in question this year: Club Noir (O2 Academy, Glasgow, Sun 11 Feb, below) have their sexy burlesque-y Valentines Masked Ball slightly early, while Aidan Moffat hosts his Valentine’s Revue (Oran Mor, Glasgow, Wed 16 Feb) a bit later. In the east, Café Voices (Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh, Wed 9 Feb) anticipates Valentine’s Day with some poetry, story and song, while Gutter Magazine’s Alternative Valentine’s (National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh, 15 Feb) takes a different look at love, with guests including Ewan Morrison (for more from him, see page 19). Romantic meals, at least, can be planned for the 14th. You could opt for a Scottish Valentine’s flavour courtesy of The Bothy (11 Ruthven Lane, Glasgow, 0845 166 6032), which offers a three-course menu for £29.95, or perhaps some aphrodisiacal oysters at the Rogano Oyster Bar (11 Exchange Place, Glasgow, 248 4055). Ondine (2 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, 226 1888) has its own oyster options, with four varieties on the menu; for something slightly different, a meal at VinCaffè (11 Multrees Walk, Edinburgh, 557 0088) on Valentine’s Day will come accompanied by the love songs of Dean Martin, crooned live by Philip Contini. Now that’s amore!

Post-dinner accommodation is also available at special romantic rates. Both the Marks Hotel (110 Bath Street, Glasgow, 353 0800) and Glasgow City Hotel (27 Elmbank Street, Glasgow, 227 2772) have two-night Valentine’s deals for under £150, with dining and romantic perks included. The Scotsman Hotel (20 North Bridge, Edinburgh, 556 5565) and Tigerlily (125 George Street, Edinburgh, 225 5005) have slightly pricier deals, from £165-£395, depending on just how luxurious you’d like your stay to be.
