The Cunning Little Vixen Theatre Royal, 282 Hope Street, 0844 871 7647. 7.15pm. £6.90–£23.50. Leos Janácek’s The Cunning Little Vixen is performed by the RSAMD in collaboration with Scottish Opera. Janácek composed the opera in 1924, adapting the libretto from a daily comic that appeared in a Czech newspaper. The story, which has been likened to a Czech Midsummer Night’s Dream, takes place in a forest, set among gypsies, poachers, woodsmen and the animals of the woodland. See preview, page 76.

Off-kilter and quirky, Stravinsky’s Jeu de Cartes (‘Card Game’) is a ballet in three ‘deals’ and is a masterpiece of extroverted, witty music. Next is Haydn’s Symphony No 83 (‘La Poule’), and you’ll spend the rest of the evening humming because last on the programme is Tchaikovsky’s irresistibly catchy music to The Nutcracker.
