Music ROCK&POP
5 REASONS
TO GO SEE ROXY MUSIC 1. Ferry, Manzanera, Mackay and Thompson For the first time in a decade, it’s the full classic line-up together live onstage in Scotland. Well, apart from the keyboard player – some bloke called Brian Eno – but whoever remembers keyboard players anyway?
2. If it wasn’t for Roxy Music. . . . then arguably there’d be no Talking Heads, Orange Juice, Blur, Pulp or Franz Ferdinand et al. Formed by fine-art graduate Bryan Ferry in 1971, Roxy were the original art school band, and have inspired a long lineage of nascent pop stars to swap paintbrushes for guitars since. 3. Olympia Persistent rumours of a new Roxy album were quashed in 2010 when Ferry instead released material mooted for the follow-up to the band’s ‘final’ LP, 1982’s Avalon, on a solo longplayer entitled Olympia. But they may play a few tracks off it that represent new Roxy tunes in all but name, featuring as they do contributions from guitarist Manzanera, saxophonist Mackay and even Eno (their erstwhile cape-wearing sonic wizard politely declined to join the tour, but he’ll be there in spirit).
4. For your pleasure With no new record proper to punt, these shows – part of Roxy Music’s 40th anniversary For Your Pleasure tour – promise to be all killer, no filler. That means ‘Love Is the Drug’, ‘Virginia Plain’, ‘Do the Strand’ and much more from one of the most stylish repertoires in pop.
5. For the thrill of it all The ever-dapper Ferry remains something of a heartthrob even though he’s old enough to claim his bus pass. We’ll wager that guys and gals alike will give a shriek when the frontman struts onstage in his dinner suit. (Malcolm Jack) ■ Clyde Auditorium, Glasgow, Thu 27 & Fri 28 Jan. See review in next issue.
