DVD ROUND-UP
Scrabbling for cash in the post- Christmas slump, there’s nothing better than a good night in. If a trip to Blockbuster to rent The Expendables doesn’t grab you, you can pick from a handful of more left-field recent releases. Boys on Film 5: Candy Boy (●●●●●) is the latest compilation of shorts from Peccadillo Pictures. The nine films from across the globe cover a multitude of issues, the most unsettling being ‘James’ – the tale of a young Irish schoolboy’s fascination with his teacher. While the success of earlier collections mean volume five has a lot to live up to, diverse pieces such as ‘Last Call’ and ‘Go Go Reject’ make it worthwhile.
Le Refuge (Artificial Eye
●●●●●) features wealthy heroin addict Mousse (Isabelle Carré) waking up in a Paris emergency room to find her boyfriend has died of an overdose and she is pregnant with his child. She retreats to a house outside the city to grieve and prepare for motherhood, later joined by the deceased’s gay brother (Louis- Ronan Choisy). Although the latter relationship is slightly unbelievable, Carré’s knack for sensitive, idiosyncratic characters and the prolific François Ozon’s subtle direction prevent the film from becoming forgettable. Villa Amalia (Peccadillo
●●●●●) opens with Ann (Isabelle Huppert) discovering that her long- term partner has been playing away. Abandoning France for rural Italy she embarks on an affair with a local woman and begins to reinvent herself.
Lesbian Psycho (Peccadillo ●●●●●) is not ‘good’, but it is massively entertaining. A troop of ex-girlfriends head into the Texan wilderness for a camping trip with a twist, unaware that a killer is about to pick them off one by one. Despite a predictable ending and stereotypical characters, this is like The L Word meets Scream on a budget. Put your tongue firmly in your turkey-fattened cheek and enjoy. (Lauren Mayberry)
