Noticeboard NewsGossipOpinion Edinburgh will play host to Biffy Clyro, The Charlatans and Ian Rankin
New Year state of mind From Scotland’s finest rock stars to reality star throw-backs, Scotland’s hogmanay is hotting up Words: Anna Millar
I f there’s one thing – of the many – that Scotland does well it’s Hogmanay. From the hundreds of thousands who line up in Princes Street and around the city in Edinburgh to watch the festivities, to its west coast counterpart in George Square, home- grown talent is to the fore this year with headliners being announced for celebrations around Scotland.
As if we weren’t already excited enough about Biffy Clyro and The Charlatans bringing in the bells in the capital, they’ll be joined by Ian Rankin, who joins the festivities the following day to talk about Edinburgh as an inspirational city for the arts, as part of the New Year’s Day Conversation. Elsewhere, an array of Scotland’s finest authors and musicians will appear for One Day: Resolution Square, a day paying tribute to homegrown talent, with haikus from Don Paterson, Jackie Kay and many more, appearing on
screen on The Mound on 1 Jan. Lau and Julie Fowlis provide the music. Later, the One Day: Resolution Concert sees KT Tunstall appear. Across in Glasgow entertainment comes in the eclectic guise of Salsa Celtica, Skerryvore, Capercaillie, Black Rose Ceilidh Band, Williamwood Pipe Band, with Dolphin Boy on DJ-ing duties. Over in Stirling revellers should prepare for Darius Campbell (formerly Danesh of reality television bunfight Pop Idol); he joins Madness tribute act Madnish – you have been warned.
Further north in Aberdeen expect the requisite fireworks over Her Majesty’s Theatre, while in Inverness look out for their New Year Ceilidh, specifically aimed at families.

step guide to the acts you cannot afford to miss.
5 Things. . . MOVIE REMAKES Daft Punk have soundtracked Tron Legacy, but who would score some other 80s remakes?
1 Coming to America by
Vampire Weekend Africa/NY culture clash comedy mixed
with ‘Upper West Side Soweto’ afro-pop. It has to be.
2 Blue Velvet by Beach House Could Lynch’s vivid nightmare of the suburban underbelly be soundtracked by Beach House’s eerie dream pop?
3 Ghostbusters by Jedward
Who you gonna call? That’s right, it’s Jedward. Lead roles
played by JLS.
4 Blade Runner by Max Richter
The Edinburgh- based composer’s simmering tones
would make a fine follow on from Vangelis’ original score.
5 Lost Boys by My Chemical
Romance They turned down the Twilight soundtrack. Were they waiting for the remake of this superior teen-angst vamp flick?

ROCKNESS HEADLINERS REVEALED ■ It’s no secret that the folks at RockNess know how to throw a good party, and next year won’t be bucking the trend with Kasabian and the Chemical Brothers confirmed as the headliners. Both are familiar faces, having played the festival before. Paolo Nutini will also join next year’s shindig, which sets its stall, as always, just outside of Inverness, from 10–12 Jun. Organisers are encouraging
festivalgoers to take advantage of Go Green tickets for next June, which are on sale now and include free coach travel from all major UK cities. The latest announcements come as RockNess proves its festival metal scooping Line-up of the Year at the UK Festival Awards. Festival director Jim King said, ‘The bands love playing at RockNess for many reasons but the single most important one is they just love performing in front of our crowd and so it’s the loyal RockNess customers who deserve the award more than anyone.’
The Glasgow Film Festival is to host the First UK Disability Film Festival on the International Day of Disabled People, Fri 3 Dec. The festival will include short films put together by people with learning difficulties, as well as feature film Magic Hour. The programme includes work created from all over the world. Look out for a special screening of the 1986 BBC drama, Raspberry Ripple (pictured), starring John Gordon Sinclair and animation The White Wall, telling the tale of a young girl trying to fit in. 2–16 Dec 2010 THE LIST 7
