TO GO TO. . . GLASGOW POPFEST 1 The Power Cut Choir Welcome to Glasgow’s newest music festival, which presents a bunch of bands and DJs in the indie-pop, post-punk and twisted folk veins over three days and two venues. There’s way too much to go into here, so instead The List will choose five of the best for you and promise there are many more where that came from. Let’s start with this Glasgow- based pop choir, successors to The Parsonage’s style.
2 The Orchids Freshly returned with their fifth album The Lost Star earlier this year, the classic Scots twee pop outfit will return the audience to their 1980s heyday, back when they were signed to the seminal Sarah Records and producing the kind of sweet hearted indie tracks which defined Glasgow back in the day. 3 The Felt Tips A heavily- accented Glasgow quartet (pictured) with a penchant for jangling guitars and elaborate, swoonsome lyricism that owes at least a small debt to Belle & Sebastian. Their prime influence is obvious though: they have a song called ‘Dear Morrissey’.
4 The Hardy Boys Formed in Greenock and active in the second half of the 1980s, this reformed bunch are a forgotten gem. Massive congratulations are also due for owning the mighty album title The Hardy Boys Play Songs From The Lenin And McCarthy Songbook. 5 The Electric Pop Group
Adorable and deeply gorgeous music with a shoegaze chime from Gothenburg brothers Erik and Martin Aamot, whose second album Seconds was released earlier this year on Californian label Matinée Recordings. And that’s your lot for now, but a whole twenty-three others bands will be playing, which is pretty damn good value for a twenty quid weekend ticket.
