John Landis’ Hollywood romp Burke and Hare may be on the big screen at a multiplex near you, but if you’re intrigued by the notorious 19th century murderers/grave robbers it’s well worth having a look at this new production from Edinburgh-based company Siege Perilous. Rather than a simple retelling of the duo’s dastardly deeds, crime writer Caroline Dunford’s play is set in the death cell of Calton Jail and focuses on William Burke as he awaits his execution in front 25,000 people, reflecting on his crimes with only his jailor for company. ■ The Store (formerly The GRV), Edinburgh, until Sat 20 Nov.
