Glasgow Femi Kuti & The Positive Force The Arches, Argyle Street, 565 1000. 8.30pm. £17.50. Top quality contemporary Afro/World music led by the Nigerian multi-instrumentalist and singer. See Edinburgh, Wed 1. Edinburgh AfroCubism Usher Hall, Lothian Road, 228 1155. 7.30pm. £19.50—£24.50. The Buena Vista Social Club was originally meant to be a very different album: in 1996 a group of musicians from Mali were due to fly to Havana and collaborate with some of Cuba’s finest. The Malians never made it, but the sessions became a hugely successful album and international phenomenon anyway. In what will be a memorable night of music, the original Afro-Cuban line-up has been brought together to release an album and tour internationally. The seven-strong lineup includes some of the greatest players from Mali and Cuba, including kora maestro Toumani Diabate. See feature, page 18.

Ever happy to be instrumental (geddit?) in developing Scotland’s live music scene, The List has teamed up with Live and Unsigned, a UK- wide competition aimed at finding the next great bands and singers. Applications are accepted online at www.liveandunsigned.uk.com enter now to bag an audition slot at the regional auditions when they come to Edinburgh Corn Exchange on Sat 29 Jan, or the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Sat 5 Feb. The List will also be doing its part to showcase the best Scotland has to offer at our own site at www.list.co.uk/liveandunsigned, where bands can upload their music for others to listen to, as well as find out a bit more about them. One especially lucky (and talented) group of musicians will be chosen by The List to write a diary, describing their path through all stages of the competition. Visit www.list.co.uk/liveandunsigned and upload your band’s details by mid-December to be the band we’re rooting for in the competition. 18 Nov–2 Dec 2010 THE LIST 79
