Howling success
As In the Company of Wolves return with their latest multi-media jamboree, Anna Millar takes a walk on the wild side
Multi-platform events company In the Company of Wolves don’t do subtle. In spring of this year entertainment and events students Ally Turnbull and Claire Stuart leapt onto the scene, launching a showcase of independent design in a multi-faceted event complete with catwalk show, art and music, celebrating local designers such as Rebecca Torres, Rachael Albert and Rowan Joy as well as Obscure Couture, Velvet Tigers and Dazed Dorothy Accessories. Artwork was featured courtesy of Lou Prendergast and everyone basked in their wonderfully bizarre Alice in Wonderland theme. This month’s event at the Sub Club, Turnbull promises, will be just as eclectic, with a slightly darker theme taking centre stage for this, their latest, multimedia stramash. ‘This time we have taken inspiration from the David Lynch TV series Twin Peaks, Metropolis and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, which are personal favourites of ours,’ explains Turnbull. ‘We want to take the audience into a world of dreamscapes and nightmares to showcase a new group of designers, plus a couple we loved from the first time round.’
Following their event earlier in the year, the girls went on to be nominated and win the Scottish Event Awards’ ‘Student Event’ section. The pair are now keen to build on their previous success.
November’s line-up includes such design names as Mark Conlin, Hilary Laing, OUI Designs, Chouchou Couture, Loula Creates, Mee Mee Couture, Catherine Aitken bags and Jennie Loof, while Teamy from Wrong Island will be providing the soundtrack. For Turnbull and Stuart it was about finding a gap in the market and celebrating Scottish talent – as well as doing their bit for charity, with proceeds from the tickets going to Glasgow Women’s Aid. ‘In the last couple of years there seems to have been an increase in fashion show-type events – I think it’s great for Glasgow,’ says Turnbull.
‘Events like these promote the talent Glasgow has to offer and puts Glasgow on the fashion map. Most talented designers fly the nest to go to London so it’s good to see local designers sticking around, promoting themselves and the city, plus it’s an event manager’s dream to create events with such artistic and motivated individuals. ‘We promise that you will see beautiful new collections from some of the most talented designers Glasgow has to offer.’
