How did you get that job?
Name Steven Thomson When did you start your job? 23rd February 2004
Job Title Producer Company Glasgay!
So what does your job actually involve? Chief cook, bottle washer, multi- tasking, marketing, programming, fundraising, creative visioning;
avoiding sideswipes from politicians, church and state; uplifting hearts and minds and generally trying to be positive about our daily challenged LGBT lives. Oh yes and making art and theatre, let’s not forget that bit. And mopping some very fevered brows. Best / Worst Aspects? Best – I get to spend time with lots of lovely artists, writers, directors, designers and actors imagining new worlds and sorting out old ones.
Worst – constantly responding to the ever shifting political doublespeak of our funders and supporters. Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Steven at the start of his career? Don’t get side-tracked by timewasters. Learn to say no. Be open to new possibilities. Don’t have that large sandwich and umpteenth black cawfee it’s killin ya!. Oh yes and I know .. when someone says I know a funder who will support that – run like the clappers – the exercise will do you
good. Learn to collaborate and try not to do it all on your own. Make time for your own art practice, family and friends … after all it’s just a job and your “arts” won’t keep you warm in bed at night. And finally . . . tell us what you are looking forward to at Glasgay? PANIC PATTERNS by Zoe Strachan and Louise Welsh at the Citizens Theatre 19–30 Oct. It’s deliciously claustrophobic and scary and directed by the wonderful Alison Peebles..
