DISGRUNTLED OF EDINBURGH
Dear Sir,
My pet hate is Glaswegians who go into every conversation feet first and make a point of disagreeing with everything that you say. It is extremely exasperating. Why are they always so loud and make their presence felt? Glasgow’s not called the Wild West for nothing, it seems. Gordon Crandles, Edinburgh
Editor’s note: Mr Crandles! We seem to remember receiving a letter from you recently complaining that too many people were having a grouse in this section. A scenario involving a pot and a kettle comes to mind – and just think of the letters that’ll be pouring in from Glaswegians now. . .
EXTRA POINTS Re: Burke and Hare The film Burke and Hare is out on 29 Oct 2010 and is going to be great. I know this as I’m in it. It was fab filming this film. Simon Pegg had his dog on set, which was so sweet. You
may think Bill Bailey looks cold. Well, we filmed this in the snow, yet had to make it appear as though it was a hot and sunny day. Let me tell you, it was cold, but was also so much fun. So get your glad rags on and get out and watch this film. Burke and Hare, Kent Comment posted at List.co.uk
CORNISH HASTY?
Re: Alex Cornish – Call Back (667, ●●●●●) This two-line comment hardly consitutes a review.
As many avid music fans will be aware, countless artists have had problems with ‘the difficult second album’. Not so Alex Cornish. In my opinion, Call Back contains just as many memorable tracks and is as enjoyable as his first, Until The Traffic Stops. In my mind, not a difficult second album at all. He just gets better all the time, and is a smashing bloke too. Russell A, Newcastle upon Tyne Comment posted at List.co.uk
What a lazy review. I suspect the reviewer saw that this
GOOD WILL HUNTING Re: Romeo and Juliet (667, ●●●●●) I loved this! I found the music really touching, and I thought the whole thing was extremely well done. To take a play that is so well-known and make it interesting, thoughtful and very touching must have been tough, but those involved did so brilliantly.
LETTER OF THE FORTNIGHT
I think it’s probably the best Shakespeare production I’ve ever seen, and I’m sure the crying people around me at the end would agree. Lizzie D, Edinburgh Comment posted at List.co.uk
THE LETTER OF THE ISSUE WILL RECEIVE ONE BOTTLE OF THE BLACK GROUSE WHISKY Smoky and Smooth – a marriage of fine peated Scotch malt whiskies and The Famous Grouse
album was by a male singer- songwriter and did the usual broad brushstroke put down. If James Blunt could write music like this perhaps we’d all forgive his terrible vocals. I have only recently discovered Alex Cornish and believe he is a greatly underrated talent. There is a real depth to this beautifully orchestrated album and a sensitivity many of our more familiar household singer-songwriters can only dream of. Huckleberry12, London Comment posted at List.co.uk Reviewer Niki Boyle replies: ‘I acknowledge Mr Cornish’s popularity, and the fact that The List has given him four-star live reviews in the past, but I stand by my words. The nature of the ‘Also Released’ column dictates that reviews are brief and to the point – admittedly, this can seem somewhat dismissive when removed from the context of the column. The fairest way to move on is to let people make up their own minds: give the album a listen on Spotify, then add your comment at www.list.co.uk.’
