So what does your job actually involve? It varies day to day. I assist the head of programming with all aspects of the six core exhibitions
we show every year, from sourcing materials and resources to organising travel and accommodation for artists, dealing with any logistics and issues as they arise. I also programme a monthly CCA film strand, Dark Voices, for the small cinema that we have in the building, as well as help to make sure the huge range of music and other events we have in the building go smoothly. Best/worst aspects? The best aspect of my job is meeting all these exciting and creative people and helping to realise projects that they may have been working on for years. It’s great when we’ve been working on a show for a while and then finally it opens – that’s a moment I always enjoy. The film strand allows me some creative freedom, too, which is great. I’m a film fan so this has been really interesting for me. This creative freedom is tempered at times by the nitty gritty of day-to- day admin, but that’s a small price to pay for what’s constantly an exciting place to be.
would you give to a young Kirsten at the start of her career? To have more confidence and belief in my abilities, I think a lot of people, especially women, in the arts miss opportunities because of lack of confidence. I started my career at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, and then came to CCA as an intern. That’s really helped build up my knowledge and confidence, and it’s a great way to get into the arts. And finally . . . tell us more about what is currently going on with CCA? We’ve just opened Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan’s new show, Direct Serious Action is Therefore Necessary. It’s amazing – the artists have installed a massive series of sculptural pieces that really take over the CCA space, crawling through the café bar and the foyer. They both used to work here, and they’ve long planned an artwork that makes commentary on the building itself. The show is on until 13 November , and you can find out about talks and events alongside it on our website.
