Hot Mess

PREVIEW NEW CLUB NIGHT HOT MESS Wee Red Bar, Edinburgh, Fri 8 Oct

After the demise of his first night, Club for Heroes, and having stepped down from a resident’s role at the Bongo’s Devil Disco Club, Edinburgh DJ Simonotron (aka Simon Eilbeck) is putting all his energy into a brand new bi- monthly date, Hot Mess. ‘It’s basically more queer than Club for Heroes,’ he says. ‘I’ve been inspired by clubs in Glasgow like R-P-Z, Menergy and Lock Up Your Daughters, they all play underground party music to people who are looking for something a bit different to the regular gay scene. And also, I was looking for an excuse to plaster posters of hot guys in their pants around Edinburgh.’ Describing the night as a non-exclusive one that’s ‘for queer kids and their

friends’, Eilbeck takes pride in the painstakingly constructed four-hour sets he plays, which can take up to 20 hours to create. ‘The gay club scene in Edinburgh’s quite musically conservative,’ he says. ‘If you’re not into chart pop, Lady Gaga or Glee, there isn’t much else on offer. So I’ll play the kind of music I want to hear when I go out: hi-NRG, acid house, disco, electro, Italo, that kind of stuff.’ Those who are familiar with Eilbeck’s work will realise that this is a

homecoming for him, ever since Club for Heroes left the Wee Red for the GRV. ‘I’ve realised over the last couple of years that this [the Wee Red] is my favourite club in Edinburgh,’ he says, pointing out that guests need to bring ID and sign themselves in. ‘It’s small, it holds about 150 people, it gets quite hot and sweaty. It’s intimate, but you can lose yourself in the dark corners. It’s a cliché, but I intend to take people on a journey in there, starting off with mellow stuff then getting a bit harder and faster before building up to the big climax, with people hopefully drenched in sweat and punching their fists in the air.’ (David Pollock)
