5 REASONS TO GO SEE
ISOBEL CAMPBELL & MARK LANEGAN 1 Three albums in and they’ve still got that spark. Hawk is arguably the duo’s best yet – a gritty, raw, rocker of a record. Campbell drafted in folk troubadour Willy Mason and James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins to mix things up musically, but it all still turns on the Campbell-Lanegan vocal axis. 2 Campbell’s reputation as the indie princess of twee is dead and buried. And she spits on its grave. ‘I can get so annoyed sometimes,’ she says. ‘I can do the harder stuff just as well as any man can. It wasn’t like I made a conscious decision to make it tougher – because I really love acoustic music – but I think it was something I just wanted to try.’
3 Menage a trios. Support comes from Willy Mason, who also sings on the tracks ‘Cool Water’ and a gorgeous cover of Townes van Zandt’s ‘No Place to Fall’. 4 Who knows when they might get around to album number four? ‘Lately’, the gospel-tinged epic ballad that closes the album, feels like a fitting farewell for now.
