LATE SHOW

Re: Andrew Lawrence: The Too Ugly For Television Tour 2010 (663, ●●●●●) Went along to see him knowing there was a bar inside this particular venue, where I’ve been able to pick up a drink the last three years running. But no Andrew doesn’t allow anyone to buy a drink there, and had requested that the bar was shut. Out we went to quickly pick up a couple of pints, expecting the usual ripping on the way back in, only to find that he doesn’t allow anyone in late. At all.

A specific request from the comic not the fault of the lovely Pleasance staff at all who were very understanding.

And it was my friend’s birthday. Thanks Andrew, you miserable git. B-Boy, Edinburgh Comment posted at List.co.uk

KANE MORE ABLE

Event: Russell Kane: Smokescreens and Castles Joy, anger, energy, insight, pathos, genius, brilliant. Makes the current Mock the

Week crop look a bit samey. Once Russell is playing stadiums, then I can say I saw him when he was just playing to 500 or so people. Andy Haldane, Edinburgh Comment posted at List.co.uk

LETTER OF THE FORTNIGHT PLANETARY MOTION

Article: Arj Barker You refer in your review of Arj Barker’s Fringe show to his material about Pluto no longer being classed as a planet. Pluto is still a planet. Only four percent of the IAU [International Astronomical Union] voted on this, and most are not planetary scientists. Their decision was immediately opposed in a formal petition by hundreds of professional astronomers led by Dr Alan Stern, Principal Investigator of NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto.

Stern and like-minded scientists favour a broader planet definition that includes any non-self-luminous spheroidal body in orbit around a star. The spherical part is important because objects become spherical when they attain a state known as hydrostatic equilibrium, meaning they are large enough for their own gravity to pull them into a round shape. This is a characteristic of planets and not of shapeless asteroids and Kuiper Belt Objects. Pluto meets this criterion and is therefore a planet.

Under this definition, our solar system has 13 planets and counting: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. Laurel E, Highland Park, NJ, USA

THE LETTER OF THE ISSUE WILL RECEIVE ONE BOTTLE OF THE BLACK GROUSE WHISKY Smoky and Smooth a marriage of fine peated Scotch malt whiskies and The Famous Grouse

I can understand that they’re not to everyone’s taste, but I found them to be a real delight! Martin, Edinburgh Comment posted at List.co.uk

STAR RATING BERATING

Re: Richard Herring Christ on a Bike (663, ●●●●●) If you liked Herring’s 2009 show Hitler Moustache so much why didn’t you give it the five stars it deserved?

Christ on a Bike is easily the funniest thing I have seen so far at this year’s Festival. Worth seeing for the lineage-of-Christ routine alone. Richard Herring is likeable, self-deprecating, thoughtful and very funny. Vile, Edinburgh Comment posted at List.co.uk

CORRECTIONS Re: Lovelace: A Rock Musical (663) The title role of Linda Lovelace in this four-star show is played by the actress Katrina Lenk, not by Tina Yothers as stated in the piece.

TIGER BURNING BRIGHTER Re: The Tiger Lillies Live in Concert (663, ●●●●●) Surprised by your review of this show, as I found The Tiger Lillies to be amazing at

Pleasance Courtyard this year. Not all the songs are

supposed to be humorous, and I was quite surprised at how emotional and beautiful many of their melodies were, with intriguing and poignant lyrics.

Re: Calendar Girls photo caption (663) The stage version of Calendar Girls is at the King’s Theatre, Glasgow, until 28 Aug, not at the Theatre Royal, as we stated.

Board Meeting

MR B THE GENTLEMAN RHYMER This issue we’ve got a performer with a touch of class to give some kudos to our ‘draw your show’ project. There are some acts that you meet and wish they made the rules for how the rest of the world dressed, behaved and rapped. Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer doesn’t, yet, but you could totally get tips in his lunchtime show at Ghillie Dhu. But keep the pipe empty, people, we don’t want no jaunty smoking on our watch. (Siân Bevan) Mr B appears with Sarah- Louise Young and Desmond O’Connor in Me! Me! Me! at Ghillie Dhu, 556 6550, until 26 Aug, 1.30pm, £10 (£8).
