How did you get that job?
Name Ian Nicholson
Job Title Jewellery Designer and Workshop Leader Company The Precious Metals Workshop, based at Out of the Blue in Edinburgh.
When did you start your job? I launched The Precious Metals Workshop at the start of this year after a two-year period of travel, photography and creative writing. Before this, I worked as a jeweller and silversmith under the name INsilver and taught jewellery making at Leith School of Art.
So what does your job actually involve? I teach jewellery and silversmithing from my workshop at Out of the Blue. There are classes for beginners and intermediates. For beginners, I introduce the key techniques – sawing, fi ling, hammering, piercing, texturing, soldering and polishing. I guide intermediates through personal projects and teach them some more advanced skills. I also provide space in my workshop for up-and-coming jewellers to work from.
Best / Worst Aspects? I love working in the very creative atmosphere of my workshop with the other jewellers I have in residence, and being a part of a wider artistic community at Out of the Blue, which is a really vibrant, supportive environment to work in. Every day and no days are holidays when you work for yourself and you love the work you do. Being self-employed, I only ever have to answer to myself, which is great and awful at the same time. You can really only ever have yourself to blame if things go wrong but take great joy in making them go right. Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Ian at the start of his career? Listen to your mother more! There may be a fi ne line between assistance and interfering but also, without her and my father’s guidance, this wouldn’t have been possible. I fi nd myself now looking to do things that she recommended years ago. And not just her – listen to others. It’s great to be independent but it is also wise to listen, process and fi lter advice and information from others. Saying that, and even looking at the mistakes and wrong turns I have made, I wouldn’t do things differently. Where I am now is a great place and I couldn’t be happier. All paths, good and bad, have led to where I am just now.
And fi nally . . . tell us more about Out of the Blue? Out of the Blue is a social enterprise and multi-arts venue. It supports artists by providing space to work in and opportunities to sell our wares, such as the quarterly arts markets, as well as enabling us to pass our skills on to others in the community through classes or workshops and outreach projects. Out of the Blue is based at the Drill Hall in Leith, a former military building. The fi nal stage of a seven-year project to renovate the building has just been completed, so there is now additional studio space available for 30 artists, or for other creative businesses in Edinburgh.
