The Ukulele Project are a relatively new group, forming only six months ago, and although there are truly great moments of charm and elegance in their performance, at times the group’s nerves are tangible and can leave the audience feeling slightly uneasy. If Tinchy Stryder’s second long-player, Catch 22, saw him vault the grime underground and snare the pop mainstream (number one hits, collaborations with N-Dubz and a Sugababe, the bestselling UK solo artist of 2009), you wonder what level of stardom will beckon when the hip hop champion’s follow-up album, Third Strike, is released in November. His recent business deal with Jay-Z will do his transatlantic prospects no harm – their ambitious joint venture, Takeover Roc Nation, is gearing up to capitalise on live events and new talent – while his clothing line, Star in the Hood (a nod to his debut album title), is becoming a ubiquitous high street success. But it’s the range of his new material that best signals Stryder’s global potential, from the bouncy summer rave-pop of current single ‘In My System’ to the grimy braggadocio of May’s download-only ‘street’
release ‘Gangsta?’ (the question mark is critical: lest we forget our 23-year- old protagonist is a youth role model). Stryder seems eager to re-assert and blend his grassroots rap and pop sensibilities: here’s hoping for more sneak previews here. (Nicola Meighan) ■ HMV Picture House, 08444 999 990, Fri 13 Aug, 7.30pm, £15. Part of The Edge Festival. Tinchy Stryder will be making an instore appearance, 13 Aug, 4pm, at Xile Clothing, Princes Mall, Edinburgh.
