How did you get that job?
Name Desmond O’Connor
Job Title Cabaret producer and musical comedian Company O’Connor Arts and Entertainment
When did you start your job? March 2009. Prior to that I had rather an interesting triple life as a Latin teacher by day, a cabaret performer by night and a producer/ promoter in the little windows of time that existed in between. So what does your job actually involve? It’s more a question of what doesn’t it involve. Over the last year I’ve had to do everything from stepping in as sound man, helping to rig lighting, acting as security, being agony aunt to weeping burlesque dancers, dog-sitting whilst its master did his act on stage ... oh yes, and all that alongside programming, producing, promoting and hosting up to seven cabaret shows a week!
Best / Worst Aspects? The best aspect is always the people. Performing alongside people you admire, having fun backstage with my wonderful cabaret family, entertaining the audience and getting to know everyone who makes a show possible, from the people behind the bar to the guys who clean the venue at the end of the night. The worst aspect is never quite having enough time to sit back and enjoy the fact that I have one of the most exciting jobs in the world.
Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Desmond at the start of his career? To learn how to describe yourself and what you do in a way that is suitably modest but communicates the fact that you believe in what you do. Be positive about the business you are in and the people you work with. When people bring negative energy backstage I will often draw it to their attention, maybe give them a second chance, but strike three and I will never, ever book them again. And fi nally . . . tell us about what O’Connor Arts & Entertainment has in store for the summer? This summer has probably got to be my busiest yet. Together with Julie-Ann Laidlaw of Blond Ambition Events I am running Ghillie Dhu for The Pleasance. It’s a stunning new dedicated cabaret venue that is set to take the Fringe by storm. We’re also producing two shows, Vive le Cabaret and Me!Me!Me!, which I’m starring in as well. I’m musical director of a new musical Jump, which I’m doing with the team who I worked with on Scott Mills: The Musical last year and then after the fringe, Julie-Ann and I will be taking several shows on tour around England and Europe. They say there’s no rest for the wicked, and my diary makes it clear to see that I’m a very wicked boy!
