Visual Art ART OF THE MATTER
Five enticing shows from the Edinburgh Art Festival programme Martin Creed: Down Over Up The popular contemporary artist, who won the Turner Prize in 2001 with ‘Work No. 227: The lights going on and off’, returns to Scotland with an exhibition of new and recent work created from art materials and everyday found objects such as planks of wood and stacked chairs. Fruitmarket Gallery, Market Street, 0131 225 2383, Fri 30 Jul–Sun 31 Oct, free.
Joan Mitchell Mitchell was one of the ‘second generation’ abstract expressionist painters and one of the few contemporary painters, alongside Lee Krasner, to attract critical and public acclaim for her work. And yet this exhibition of paintings on canvas and works on paper created during her career is the first museum exhibition in the UK of her work. Inverleith House, Royal Botanic Gardens, Tue 27 Jul–Sun 19 Sep, free. David Sherry: Health + Safety Effects A selection of short one-day interactive performance works in the foyers and entrance halls of the National Galleries from the well-known Glasgow-based Beck’s Futures shortlisted artist. City Art Centre, Sat 31 Jul–Sun 24 Oct, £8 (£5). Rosita McKenzie: Edinburgh People Blind photographer McKenzie presents a diverse series of images that attempt to ‘capture the natural and “pure” essence of each subject, not an artificial image, created by a contrived pose or special lighting’.
