Outside Inns
T he best thing about living in a city is discovering the bits that don’t fit; the strange contradictions that come about when streets and buildings and parks and people are packed in so tightly. In this feature we focus on the hidden green spaces, roof terraces and other oases of calm that appear in amongst the traffic and the concrete, that mean you can go shopping in one very busy world and – a hop along the street – drink your coffee in a much quieter one. Al Fresco dining is about being open to the elements, yes, but it’s about more than just being able to see the sky. Every place we’ve selected in this list has an outside area with special
charm that makes the most of the possibilities of the city. They all also serve great food and drink without ripping you off for the pleasure of sitting outside. We’ve divided our list into good places for eating and good places for drinking, though these are suggestions only, and most bars we’ve listed also serve food, and restaurants, drink. We’ve listed them from the city centre outwards, with some (The Beach House in Portobello for example) worth a day trip in themselves. We’d highly recommend that, while it lasts, you make the most of the good weather and take as many meals outdoors as possible. (Jonny Ensall)
