SIDE DISHES The Kitchin strikes again
■ There are new openings a-plenty in the capital this summer. The team behind Michelin-starred restaurant The Kitchin have opened their new establishment with Dominic Jack at the helm. Castle Terrace has the same philosophy and passion for seasonal Scottish produce as The Kitchin, showcased by a three-course lunch menu at £19.50 and six-source surprise tasting menu at £55. ■ The family behind the much-missed original Patio have brought us Nonna’s Kitchen on the site of the former Blue Glass in Morningside. Delivering an authentic Italian experience of eating and drinking with friends and family, it already has legions of fans.
■ Chop Chop has opened its long-anticipated branch in Leith, where their award-winning dumplings can be enjoyed by those in the east of the city; and following an extensive face lift, The Apartment is now open again for business.

XIANG BALA 63 Dalry Road, Haymarket, 0131 313 4408 Edinburgh’s most authentic Chinese restaurant is not for the faint-hearted. Park yourself before your very own steaming cauldron of broth and order a platter of raw ingredients ranging from pak choi to razor clams, via squid, soy beef and chilli chicken claw, then simmer your own dinner. Though a newcomer to the dining scene, Edinburgh’s Chinese community have already laid claim to this place, so be prepared to fight for a table.
