How did you get that job?
Name Colin Rodger
Job Title Head of Event Management & Production Company DF Concerts Ltd.
When did you start your job? 16 years ago. I started out managing small bands, bars and nightclubs, having decided that I made the wrong choice at university studying pharmacy. I was approached by a mutual friend of the owner of the company at the time to come and run the concerts the company promoted.
So what does your job actually involve? The bookers within the company arrange the bands and then it’s passed to me and my team to organise the concerts and make all the arrangements for the artists. This can be in small venues from King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut to the Barrowlands, to SECC/Hampden Park and large greenfi eld sites such as Glasgow Green, Bellahouston Park and Balado Park.
Best / Worst Aspects? The best aspect is that I enjoy my job as much today as I did the day I started. I have a brilliant team of people who are passionate about the music and what we do, and the satisfaction of standing on a stage looking out at the audience enjoying a successfully run show/event. That makes it worthwhile every time. The downside is that some artists can be diffi cult and what they want to do can be challenging. Also, we work long hours and move quickly from job to job, which is intense and can be stressful. Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Colin at the start of his career? I’ve achieved the goals I’ve set myself over the years and if not, surpassed them. The advice I would give myself is make sure my family feel appreciated for all the help that they give, which allows you to do your job and get out of life what you want. And to keep a diary to remind yourself when you’re older of all the stories, like going clubbing with Robbie Williams, having dinner with Pavarotti, going shopping with Tony Bennett, eating chips in a van with Radiohead, having a drink with the guys from Coldplay and wandering around the Barrowlands market with Eminem.
And fi nally . . . tell us more about T in the Park This weekend is T’s 17th year and as much as we would like T to be the same every year it never is. It throws up new challenges and loads of excitement for ourselves and the audience. This year is particularly special with the amazing headliners we’ve got. We’re trying to get everyone to make T even better by asking them to help with their litter and put it in the bins provided. We know everyone is exhausted at the end of the event and just wants to get home, but we need everyone to take their tents home and reuse them to help save the planet.
