SUMMER WORKSHOPS GLEE CLUB Theatre Royal, Glasgow, Mon 12–Thu 15 Jul
Glee may have left our television screens but Glasgow’s Theatre Royal is giving kids the chance to be their own Rachel Berry or Finn Hudson this summer. Children can take part in the theatre’s popular series of workshops, giving 8–16- year-olds a chance to showcase their showbiz talents without worrying about a nerve wracking audition process. The new summer workshops are centred around popular TV programmes and
films that children would enjoy. ‘We chose them because it captures the children’s imagination,’ says Karen Townsend of Creative Learning Glasgow. ‘This then allows us to build and explore other broader themes within the workshops – for example the more technical aspects of theatre, TV and film.’
The workshops are designed to help young performers lower their inhibitions, gain confidence and discover what it takes to pull off an effortless performance. For four days youngsters can create their own McKinley High Glee club, learning a new song and routine each day, which will then be performed for family and friends.
But it’s not just for Gleeks! Twilight fans can also create their own Bella, Edward
or Jacob in the theatrical make-up master classes. But how will Townsend and the other leaders deal with the Team Edward, Team Jacob divide? ‘We have people specially trained at the Van Helsing School of Chaperones,’ she says. ‘In Twilight the only way to kill a vampire is to rip it to shreds and burn the pieces, we feel that’s something best left to the theatre critics!’ (Julia Correia)
