COASTAL PATH Article: Pioneering Painters (653) I should have thought that your summary of this event would have mentioned the importance of Kirkcudbright in the history of the Glasgow Boys. There have been two very successful exhibitions recently called The Homecoming and Home Again. If anyone attending The Glasgow Boys exhibition is unfamiliar with Charles Oppenheimer for example, they are in for a treat. Frank Maycock, Gatehouse of Fleet Comment posted at List.co.uk

MAKING MYTH TAKES Article: Christopher Hitchens Hitch-22 (658) In his review of Christopher Hitchens’ new book, Hitch-22, Brian Donaldson writes, ‘Love him or get really annoyed by him . . .’ Well, I get really annoyed by Brian Donaldson, and people like him who help to perpetuate a myth. When Donaldson writes, ‘Many of history’s key figures have contradictory sides to their nature’, he cites Hitler as an example, claiming, ‘Hitler loved animals so much he couldn’t bring himself to chomp on them, but was less sentimental when it came to

BLUE SKY DRINKING Article: West End Festival I thought the 2010 West End Festival was disappointing in one respect the spectacle of police officers going round the crowd removing cans of beer that the council or whatever by-law deems forbidden in Kelvingrove Park.

Have the organisers ever been to a music festival? The crowd, to my mind, was largely very well behaved. People were just enjoying some rare sunshine. Treating adults like naughty schoolchildren does not impress anyone especially the bemused tourists.

I can’t see why this event needs to be policed in such a heavy-handed manner. It does not show the city in a good light. Adrian Comment posted at List.co.uk

millions of humans.’ Joseph Goebbels must have been the most successful of all spin doctors, because it was he that thought up the idea of making Hitler out to be a vegetarian, thinking that this would give him the right image. However, far from being vegetarian, Hitler ate vast quantities of meat, so much so that his diet caused him serious health problems. He would adopt a temporary vegetarian diet to recover his

health and would then resume his high meat intake. Yours faithfully, Sandra Busell, Edinburgh Comment posted at List.co.uk CHARACTER ANALYSIS Article: Jimmie Durham (656) I am a writer researching an article on the art of Mohawk artist Joe David, whose work is referenced in the exhibition. I have seen several articles in

Scottish media refer to David as a ‘leader’ during the Oka Crisis of 1990. Joe was not the leader type. He was a quiet, bookish artist who sometimes made a living as a gardener. He was active in resisting the expansion of a golf course over the community’s burial ground, which is where his grandparents are buried. The Mohawk people did not have any leaders as such during the crisis. There were spokespeople, the most famous of whom is Ellen Gabriel, who continues to work as an artist and community leader. I felt compelled to correct this misrepresentation because Joe David, who passed away some years ago, would surely disagree with your portrayal. Jennifer, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada THE LAST MOVIE Article: Dennis Hopper 1936-2010 (658) I cannot express how refreshing it was to be given a frank and honest insight into the late, great Dennis Hopper. It was so much more moving to read tributes from friends and admirers than the usual rehashed biography done in so many other magazines. As a huge fan of Dennis Hopper, thank you. Alex, Glasgow
