PREVIEW LGBT CELEBRATION PRIDE SCOTIA Various venues and locations, Edinburgh, Sat 26 Jun
Pride Scotia is an annual mainstay of Edinburgh’s LGBT calendar, and this year brings even more reasons to pull on your marching boots and take to the streets in celebration. It’s 30 years since homosexuality was decriminalised in Scotland and ten years since the repeal of Section 28, which prohibited local councils from distributing material that portrayed gay relationships as anything other than abnormal. The Pride Scotia march, which assembles at 12.30pm at East Market Street in the capital, is the ideal way to celebrate these advances while remembering those around the world who still live in fear of their sexuality. The march winds up as usual at the Omni Centre, a mere hop, skip and a jump from Gayfield Square where there will be a Youth Space housed in a large pink tent and run by LGBT Youth Scotland, whose delights include music, a drag and dress up stall and sumo suit wrestling. Organisers have also secured the Nelson Hall at the McDonald Road Library as the site of this year’s Kids’ Space, where youngsters aged six months–ten years will be watched over by the Edinburgh Creche Co-op. Meanwhile, the Health and Community Fair at GHQ features stalls from an array of exhibitors including Gay Men’s Health, ScotsGay Magazine and Waverley Care.
Revellers may wish to enjoy a spot of culture before taking to the clubs courtesy of Edinburgh Gay Men’s Chorus who present their summer concert at St George’s West Church. And it doesn’t stop there – party into the wee hours with your mates at GHQ’s Pride bash. (Allan Radcliffe) ■ www.pride-scotia.org
