PAUL McCARTNEY 1. He hasn’t played Scotland in twenty years. Not since a show at the SECC almost to the day in 1990. Can you believe that? No, nor can we. ‘Scotland holds such a special place for me,’ Sir Macca has stated, ‘I have loads of Scottish mates and so many great memories of being there.’ We’ll let you off, then. 2. ‘Mull of Kintyre’ Inspired, of course, by his old home on the Kintyre Peninsula in Argyll & Bute. Thank god John Lennon mentioned Kirkcaldy in ‘Cry Baby Cry’, otherwise this roundly derided number would be Scotland’s biggest influence upon The Beatles’ collective back catalogue. Still, we’ll all be singing it after a few beers, right?
3. He goes on a bit. Did you see him at Glastonbury the other year? Went on for bloody ever, didn’t he? And pretty much every song in his marathon set was one of the biggest popular hits of the late 20th century, wasn’t it? Even wilful obscurists and Beatles haters should give him more than a bit of credit for that. Expect a long night that just flies by. 4. He’ll play the hits . . . The set promises ‘songs from The Beatles, Wings and Paul’s solo work, including tracks from The Fireman’s 2008 album Electric Arguments.’ NB: Don’t file that last one under hits.
5. . . and maybe some real classics. The Manson Family’s frightening platter of choice ‘Helter Skelter’? The early 80s proto-Italo of ‘Temporary Secretary’? ‘Jet’, one of the most joyously nonsensical pop songs ever? All are McCartney’s, and all are truly life- enhancing pieces of music.
