How did you get that job?
Name Svetlana Shevchenko Job Title Managing Director
Company Edinburgh International Magic Festival When did you start your job? June 2009
So what does your job actually involve? The Festival team is very small at the moment and all of us are totally multi-tasking. As a Managing Director I’m in charge of all the fi nancial and administrative activities of the Edinburgh International Magic Festival. But in reality my job involves anything, from developing the business strategy and establishing relationships with the Festival’s supporters and suppliers, to briefi ng designers and choosing the right types of paper for promotional materials with my favourite printing shop. Best / Worst Aspects? The Festival has become my life in every way and I’m still not sure if it is the best or the worst aspect of my job – when your to-do list never fi ts in one page, when you have to work till late, trying to meet endless deadlines or start to dream about insurance policies, these are the worst parts. The best thing about my job is that you get to meet lots of astonishing magicians who are such wonderfully creative and colourful people. I get insider information about this mysterious magic industry with all its complicated rules and secrets. I just can’t get enough!
Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Svetlana at the start of her career? I would tell her to do as much networking and work experience as possible and constantly look out for more opportunities. A degree only gets you so far but if you come out of university with loads of practical skills and a fat contact book you will be heads and shoulders above most of your peers. And fi nally . . . tell us more about the Magic Festival? The fi rst ever Edinburgh International Magic Festival will happen from 7–11 July 2010 and the line-up we have prepared will truly leave you on the edge of your seat, wanting more. There will be something for everyone with eight shows running every night across four atmospheric venues all fi ve minutes walk from the Royal Mile. During the fi ve day festival, audiences will be treated to War of the Wizards competitions, Magic School for kids and a Spectacular Magic and Variety Gala Show in the Royal Lyceum Theatre, which will see internationally acclaimed acts performing award winning shows. To all magic lovers and magic newbies we say this – come along and ‘unbelieve it!’, there is absolutely nothing like a live magic experience. More info and tickets at www.magicfest.co.uk
