In 2008 he graduated with a masters degree in electronic imaging from Duncan of Jordanstone, having previously gained an honours degree in time-based art from the same institution. During his years in Dundee Sam created filmic artworks based on the relationships between sound and image and also became immersed in camera-less filmmaking, using the surface of 8mm celluloid. Since graduating he has continued to develop his practice and recently exhibited film works as part of group exhibitions in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Aberdeen Art Gallery.
