PREVIEW THEATRE LOVE AND HUMAN REMAINS St Bride’s Centre, Edinburgh, Thu 20–Sat 22 May

The Luvvies may be an amateur theatre company, but the Edinburgh-based LGBT troupe has never shied away from tackling challenging works. Previous productions include Painted Eggs, which focused on the life of a transgender woman, and This Year’s Thing, written to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. The company’s latest show is perhaps their most ambitious yet: a revival of Canadian playwright Brad Fraser’s pithily titled hit Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love. ‘I’d seen the film (1993’s Love and Human Remains) a while ago, and was

attracted by the challenges of performing such a controversial piece on stage in Edinburgh,’ says director Roger Burroughes. ‘Reading the play script I was aware of how different it was from the film and it would be especially challenging for an amateur company, but I thought the challenge was worth accepting.’

Originally set in Edmonton, Canada in the 1980s, and following a group of disparate characters as they search for love while a serial killer terrorises their city, the location has been moved for this production, without too much tinkering, to Edinburgh. The company has also made some slight adjustments to tone down the graphic sexual content of Fraser’s original.

‘One of the challenges for the Luvvies was to find a way of portraying the

dramatic importance of this without necessarily baring all on stage (something that may not be easy to persuade amateur actors to do!),’ says Burroughes. ‘We have, necessarily, reduced some of the explicit sexual content to avoid legal complications but have, hopefully, retained the power of the piece.’

The Luvvies’ next outing will be a production of Ibsen’s The Doll’s House with a gender twist, while they’re also in the process of writing a sequel to This Year’s Thing. ‘All of our productions have been available and accessible to a wide

audience, but we do concentrate on LGBT issues there’s no point in being an LGBT company if you put on plays that other drama groups wouldn’t think twice about doing. We want to entertain and challenge in an LGBT-orientated space.’ (Allan Radcliffe)
