Edinburgh CLUB INDIA
105-109 Lothian Road, West End, 0131 229 7747, www.club-india.com, £9.95 (set lunch) / £19 (dinner) Who would have thought it? Smack in the midst of Lothian Road, in scampering distance from the Filmhouse, a creative, good-value new Indian venue. The man with the vision is Khalil Mamsoori, whose years of experience of Edinburgh Indian food stretch back decades with Shamiana and Saffrani. On a smaller menu you’ll find king prawns, tandooried or curried, and sogati, marinated halibut gently encased in tender spinach leaves. A gap is genuinely being filled in Lothian Road.
THE GLASSHOUSE OFF THE MILE 12-26 St Giles Street, Old Town, 0131 225 4564, www.theglasshouseoffthemile.com, £14 (lunch)/£20 (dinner)

Executive chef Steven Adair has transplanted much of the team from his previous restaurant in Musselburgh to this stylish new venture, helping it to hit the ground running. The contemporary restaurant space adjoins five-star accommodation (Fraser Suites), and locally sourced, seasonal produce is prepared with some aplomb and with big flavours to the fore: ham hough and pig’s cheek terrine, for example, or rump of Perthshire lamb rolled in cumin rock salt with pink grapefruit and coriander jus.
YO! SUSHI Harvey Nichols, 30-34 St Andrew Square, New Town, 0131 341 1771, www.yosushi.com, £10 (lunch/dinner) The gleamng new Yo! Sushi at Harvey Nichols adds yet another colour to the Forth Floor’s gourmet palette. While the chain has been away from Edinburgh for a few years, most folk know the score and love the novelty of it: dishes, colour coded according to price, float past on the conveyor belt and you either pick up what you want or request something in more conventional manner from the menu. It’s a really fun place for a quick bite or a lingering lunch.
Following the publication of our Eating & Drinking Guide, fullly revised, independent write-ups on all the restaurants worth knowing about in Edinburgh and Glasgow will be available on our online Eating & Drinking Guide, list.co.uk/food-and-drink, from mid-May. Prices shown are for an average two- course meal for one.
SIDE DISHES The guide’s out, so Food & Drink editor Donald Reid can put his fork down? No chance.
■ This year’s Eating & Drinking Guide has 113 new entries, which is more than one opening per week in both Glasgow and Edinburgh over the last 12 months. Not bad going for the worst recession in memory.
And they keep on coming. Just to give you
a flavour, the roll-call of April unveilings in Glasgow includes Elià Greek on George Square, the Butcher Shop Bar and Grill close to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and Bo’vine (pictured, above), a steak restaurant at the top of Byres Road. Meanwhile, through in Edinburgh there’s a new Filipino restaurant, Rice Terraces, on St Leonard’s Street, Bella Mbriana at the foot of Broughton Street is reinventing itself as Locanda di Gusti, though it remains under the direction of chef Rosario Sartore, and a new location for Monster Mash (though only a few doors along Forest Road).
There will be more. Keep track of them
here every fortnight and online.
