REVIEW PRINTMAKING REVEAL Edinburgh Printmakers, until Sat 15 May ●●●●●

Featuring submissions from recent graduates of Scottish universities, this exhibition is an excellent showcase for the shape of things to come. A wide range of printmaking techniques is on display here, from photolithograph to etching to screen-printing. Several pieces also work mixed media into their compositions, allowing a depth that encourages a closer look so the viewer can investigate where print meets paint or paper.

Among some of the more surprising works on display are Lucy Roscoe’s paper-cut books, which work with the

concept of 3D and texture within print, combining blind embossing (imprinting without ink) with sculpture and screenprint. Other mixed pieces of note include Kyle Noble’s arresting ‘Behind’ which works acrylic paint around amorphous printed figures, and Ellie Royle’s imposing photoetching of a doorway and surround on embossed paper, ‘The Impossible View No 5’, which dominates the far wall. Singular printmaking methods are also well represented, from the intricate detail of Rosie Walter’s etchings to the

strong Giclee prints of Robbie Porter, or Eleni Kalorkoti’s screen print ode to Anthony & Cleopatra. Some works catch the eye more immediately than others, but overall the sense of quality and skill in process is evident. (Miriam Sturdee)
